Bloomin Spring!

Spring is a'buzz, and despite my incessant sneezing, I couldn't be more grateful for all of the beautiful blooms.  Azaelas, Viburnum, Amelanchier...Flowering cherries and plums and Redbuds, oh my...not to mention annuals like Petunias, Millionbells, Diascia, Diamond Frost!

::sigh::

And then, there are the tamaters, heirlooms and otherwise!  Sweet corn! Peppers! And herbs...Parsely, rosemary, chives (and the list goes on.)

So, let's do it, people.  It's time to 'git to it in our beloved beds or container or rooftop gardens, sowing seeds and digging in the dirt, mending our weary winter-worn bodies and minds.  To Spring!

Riverview Has Fresh Flowers for Your Valentine!

A Valentine's Day Ditty for You

Love's not always easy,
Two minds not always one.
I'm dancing in the kitchen while
You march to your own drum.

I cook up veggie burgers,
You make ham and mashed potatoes.
I like acoustic melodies,
Your amps blow like tornados.

Even though we're different,
In many different ways,
You always make me smile
When I'm in a foggy haze.

Even though we're different,
In too many ways to speak of,
I'll always try to show you that
That this is a true and deep love.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Our next Event: Mini Indoor Gardening!

Our Miniature Indoor Garden Series Event is just around the bend, so we thought a preview of what's in store might inspire you to join us next Saturday, February 9th, from 2-3 for our 2nd workshop of the day entitled "Little Landscapes: Creating Terrariums."

I don't know about you, but I get a mean case of the winter blues when I can't dig in the dirt all season long, so making these sweet little landscapes are just what I need for a pick-me-up. A recent study in the Netherlands suggests that gardening can fight stress even better than other relaxing leisure activities; why not try creating an indoor garden and see how good you feel?

I started with these "ingrediants" for my terrarium:
  • small pebbles
  • activated carbon
  • moss
  • soil
  • a few small plants, one low-growing, one bushy, one with a little height
  • a few larger rocks for decoration
  • a fish bowl for planting in
  • a stick for poking holes in the soil to plant

Ta-da! Hey, don't be jealous! Call us at (610) 929-5049 to sign up for our workshop to create your own dazzling work of art.  Hope to see you then!

A Recipe from Animal, Vegeatble, Miracle: A Year of Food Life

Here's a recipe from our upcoming book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life. Come to our Meet and Greet this Saturday, January 26th at 1pm to learn a little about the first book, your fellow book club members and to talk about the titles for the coming year. We'll discuss Animal, Vegetable, Miracle on Saturday, February 23rd at 1pm.

Barbara Kingsolver's book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is a fresh and vibrant narrative about one family's quest to live a single year off of what they can grow or buy from local farmer's markets. It is written in a diary-like format and combines Kingsolver's prose with food facts written by her husband, Steven Hopp, and recipes and nutrition information provided by her daughter, Camille Kingsolver.

Here is one of the Seasonal Winter Recipes provided in the book:
2 medium sweet potatoes
1/2 onion
1 clove garlic
1 tbsp oregano
1 tbsp basil
1 tsp cumin
chile powder to taste
olive oil for sauté
Cut sweet potatoes into chunks, cook in steamer basket or microwave until soft, then mash. Chop and sauté garlic and onion in a large skillet. Add spices and sweet potato, mix well, adding a little water if it’s too sticky. Turn burner very low to keep warm without burning.
4 flour tortillas
4 oz. Brie or other medium soft cheese
2-3 leaves Swiss Chard
(or other greens)
Preheat oven to 400. Oil a large baking sheet, spread tortillas on it to lightly oil one side, then spread filling on half of each. Top with slices of Brie and shredded chard, then fold tortillas to close (oiled side out). Bake until browned and crisp (about 15 min.), cut into wedges for serving.

Riverview Launches Garden Therapy Book Club

Do you love books? We do! And we are brimming with excitement over Riverview's first ever Garden Therapy Book Club. We will begin with a "Meet and Greet" on Saturday, January 26th from 1-2pm. Here you'll get a chance to introduce yourself and learn a little about your fellow book club members while enjoying light refreshments provided by Riverview.

We will be discussing our first book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver on Saturday, February 23rd at 1pm.

"Novelist Barbara Kingsolver once wrote, "If we can't, as artists, improve on real life, we should put down our pencils and go bake bread." In Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, she manages to do both, applying her literary skills to a new food environment. In her seamless diary narrative, Kingsolver tells how she and her family relocated to southern Appalachia after suffering through years of drought in Arizona. The purpose of the move was simple: The Kingsolvers sought to "live in a place that could feed us" by growing their own food and living among a community of local organic growers."

 - Barnes and Noble
